Hexokinase 2 (HK2)

Target
HK2
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Kinase
01

Overview

Hexokinase 2 (HK2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the first step of glycolysis, the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate. It plays a critical role in cellular energy metabolism and is often overexpressed in cancer cells, contributing to the Warburg effect. HK2's localization to the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) via binding to VDAC provides a link between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation and confers anti-apoptotic properties. Targeting HK2 is explored as a potential anti-cancer strategy.
