Hexokinase 2 pseudogene 1 (HK2P1) is a human processed pseudogene related to the protein-coding Hexokinase 2 gene. It is located on the X chromosome, integrated into a long interspersed nuclear element (LINE). The sequence of HK2P1 is highly similar to the HK2 coding DNA sequence but contains frameshift mutations, deletions, insertions, and premature stop codons, which preclude the production of a functional protein. HK2P1 does not catalyze the phosphorylation of glucose or participate directly in glucose metabolism, apoptosis, or other cellular signaling. Its biological and clinical relevance, if any, is generally limited to pseudogene research or considerations in genomic studies.
