Overview

HIG1 hypoxia inducible domain family member 1A pseudogene 15 (HIGD1AP15) is a human pseudogene related in sequence to the functional gene HIGD1A, which encodes a mitochondrial protein involved in cell survival and mitochondrial homeostasis. Unlike its functional counterpart, HIGD1AP15 does not produce a functional protein and has no established biological or therapeutic relevance[11][1]. Pseudogenes like HIGD1AP15 are identifiable DNA sequences similar to known genes but are considered non-coding and non-functional due to mutations, insertions, or inability to be transcribed or translated[11]. The functional gene (HIGD1A), not the pseudogene, has roles in mitochondrial homeostasis, cell survival during hypoxic stress, and possible involvement in diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative conditions[7][9]. However, HIGD1AP15 itself lacks these functions. There are several pseudogenes related to HIGD1A (such as HIGD1AP1, HIGD1AP6, HIGD1AP18), but none, including HIGD1AP15, are listed as drug targets or therapeutic receptors[11][6][3][5]. This target should not be considered a therapeutic target or prioritized for drug discovery efforts[11]. If seeking a functionally relevant hypoxia inducible domain target, refer to the protein-coding gene HIGD1A instead[7][9].
