HIG1 hypoxia inducible domain family member 1A pseudogene 16 (HIGD1AP16) is a human pseudogene representing a non-functional duplicate of the HIGD1A gene, which encodes a mitochondrial protein involved in mitochondrial homeostasis and cellular responses to stress[8][6]. Unlike HIGD1A, HIGD1AP16 does not encode an active protein and is not considered a molecular target or receptor for pharmacological intervention. It does not have known biochemical function, clinical relevance, or associated therapeutic drugs. The use of this pseudogene as a molecular target would be incorrect, as only the functional HIGD1A protein is implicated in biological processes and disease mechanisms[8][6].
