Overview

HIG1 hypoxia inducible domain family member 1C (HIGD1C) is a protein encoded by the HIGD1C gene whose expression is induced by hypoxia and is part of the HIG1 hypoxia inducible domain (HIGD) protein family. HIGD1C is predicted to be involved in mitochondrial respirasome assembly, acting within the mitochondrial membrane, and may contribute to the response to cellular hypoxia. While not classified as a typical therapeutic target (e.g., not a receptor, transporter, or enzyme), HIGD1C is significant for its predicted roles in mitochondrial function and hypoxic adaptation. Genetic studies in mice show that loss of Higd1c alters ventilatory and carotid body responses to hypoxia, suggesting a physiological role in respiratory adaptation under low-oxygen conditions. Diseases associated with HIGD1C include Pontiac fever in humans, though its disease associations are not well studied. No drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarker utility, or specific safety concerns are currently reported for HIGD1C.
