Overview

High mobility group box 1 pseudogene 12 (HMGB1P12) is classified as a pseudogene that shares sequence homology with the high-mobility group box (HMGB) family of proteins, particularly with HMGB1, but it is not known to encode a functional protein or participate in physiological processes[3][1]. Pseudogenes like HMGB1P12 generally arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and lack the regulatory elements or sequences required for normal gene expression[3]. There are no reports in the scientific literature, or in databases such as GeneCards or Merck/Sigma-Aldrich, of HMGB1P12 functioning as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, transcription factor, or other therapeutic target[3][1]. This entry should not be confused with the functional High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein, which is widely studied as a non-histone chromatin protein implicated in DNA binding, gene regulation, and as a therapeutic target in inflammation, cancer, and immunity[5][6][2]. HMGB1P12 does not have these functional features and is not a valid therapeutic target[3][1].
