Overview

High mobility group box 1 pseudogene 25 (HMGB1P25) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome. Unlike the parental HMGB1 gene—which codes for a well-known DNA-binding protein involved in chromatin structure, immune regulation, and inflammation—HMGB1P25 is annotated as a non-coding sequence and does not produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes like HMGB1P25 arise from duplication or retrotransposition events but generally accumulate mutations rendering them nonfunctional as protein-coding genes. There is currently no evidence that HMGB1P25 acts as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other druggable molecular target. Furthermore, no disease associations, biological regulatory functions, or drug interactions are documented for HMGB1P25 specifically, and it is not considered a biomarker, nor are there safety or therapeutic efficacy concerns reported. Many pseudogenes may exert regulatory effects on their parental or homologous genes at the RNA level (e.g., by acting as competitive endogenous RNAs/miRNA sponges in some cancers), but there is no specific evidence for such a role for HMGB1P25 itself in any disease or therapeutic area. Therefore, HMGB1P25 is not considered a canonical biomedical target or therapeutic entry point.
