High mobility group box 1 pseudogene 42 (HMGB1P42) is a nonfunctional, processed pseudogene related in sequence to the HMGB1 gene, which encodes the high mobility group box 1 protein—a chromatin-associated protein involved in DNA binding, chromatin remodeling, and regulation of transcription in the cell nucleus[3]. Pseudogenes like HMGB1P42 have high sequence similarity to functional parental genes but contain disabling mutations (such as frameshifts or premature stop codons) that prevent the production of a functional protein product[3]. Most pseudogenes are transcriptionally silent, but in certain cases (more typically in other pseudogenes), the RNA transcripts may regulate parental gene expression through mechanisms such as acting as molecular decoys for microRNAs or other RNA-binding proteins[1][2]. There is currently no evidence that HMGB1P42 itself has any such function, involvement in disease, or value as a therapeutic target.
