High mobility group box 1 pseudogene 5 (HMGB1P5) is a non-coding RNA classified as a pseudogene that shares high sequence similarity with the active high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) gene. HMGB1P5 does not encode a protein and instead may exert biological effects by acting as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sequestering microRNAs away from HMGB1 and potentially other genes with shared microRNA response elements[4]. This can indirectly modulate the regulation of HMGB1 and may influence disease processes, including some cancers and neurodegenerative diseases, through such RNA-based regulatory mechanisms[4]. HMGB1P5 itself is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
