Overview

High mobility group box 1 pseudogene 6 (HMGB1P6) is a processed human pseudogene located in the HMGB1 gene family. Unlike the protein-coding HMGB1, which has broad regulatory and inflammatory roles, HMGB1P6 does not encode functional protein and is instead thought to exert regulatory effects by acting as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA). This ceRNA activity allows HMGB1P6 to bind miRNAs that would otherwise inhibit HMGB1, thereby potentially modulating HMGB1 levels and influencing cellular stress responses, gene regulation, and carcinogenesis indirectly. Upregulation of HMGB1P6 is noted in specific cancer contexts, including endometrial, uterine, and ovarian cancers, although its primary role is non-protein coding and regulatory at the RNA level.
