High mobility group box 3 pseudogene 20 (HMGB3P20) is a human pseudogene—an inactive, non-protein-coding DNA sequence that closely resembles the functional high mobility group box 3 (HMGB3) gene. Pseudogenes such as HMGB3P20 are relics of ancient gene duplications or retrotranspositions and have accumulated sequence mutations that disable their protein-coding potential. While originally considered "junk DNA," some pseudogenes have been found to participate in gene regulation or serve as decoys for microRNAs, but there is no evidence for any functional role for HMGB3P20.
