High mobility group box 3 pseudogene 5 (HMGB3P5)

Target
HMGB3P5
Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

High mobility group box 3 pseudogene 5 (HMGB3P5) is a nonfunctional DNA sequence that resembles the high mobility group box 3 gene but has acquired disabling mutations preventing the production of a functional protein[2]. Pseudogenes such as HMGB3P5 can sometimes be transcribed into noncoding RNAs that regulate related genes via mechanisms such as RNA interference, competition for regulatory factors, or acting as microRNA decoys[1]. While some pseudogenes have functional noncoding RNA roles implicated in diseases like cancer, HMGB3P5 itself is not characterized as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter and is not the subject of approved interventions or drugs[1][2].

02

Mechanism of action

none (no mechanism of action for drugs, as it is not a target)

03

Biological functions

May function as a source of noncoding RNA involved in regulation of its parental gene and potentially other genes[1][2]Could act as a microRNA decoy, competitor for trans-acting factors, or a source of siRNAs in gene regulation[1]Typically, pseudogenes do not perform protein-coding or canonical receptor/enzyme functions
04

Disease associations

Possible regulatory roles in cancer and other diseases through noncoding RNA-mediated gene regulation (pseudogenes can regulate oncogenes or tumor suppressors)[1]No direct causal roles established for HMGB3P5 itself
