01

Overview

High mobility group nucleosomal binding domain 2 pseudogene 21 (HMGN2P21) is a processed pseudogene located on human chromosome 2. Like other processed pseudogenes, it is derived from retrotransposition events and is homologous to the protein-coding HMGN2 gene but incapable of producing a functional protein product. While pseudogenes are generally nonfunctional as proteins, some may have regulatory effects at the RNA level (such as miRNA sponging or ceRNA activity), though such roles have not been demonstrated for HMGN2P21 specifically. It is not considered a drug target, biomarker, or subject of current therapeutic strategies. HMGN2P21 is a well-characterized human processed pseudogene, not a protein-coding gene, receptor, or enzyme. It is not a therapeutic target, has no known aliases, is classified as a pseudogene, and has no established direct biological or disease role, interacting drugs, or biomarker status. Its only known function is homology to the parent HMGN2 gene; theoretical RNA-mediated regulatory effects are possible for pseudogenes in general, but unproven for this locus.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (this locus does not encode a therapeutic target)

03

Biological functions

No direct protein-coding or signaling function (pseudogenes are, by definition, nonfunctional for their original protein-coding role)Potentially acts as a regulatory element at the RNA level, according to current research on pseudogene biology; functions may include competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) activity, miRNA sponging, or altering stability of homologous coding gene transcripts in rare cases
04

Disease associations

None established for HMGN2P21 specifically; some pseudogenes in other gene families participate in cancer or other disease mechanisms via regulatory RNA interactions, but there are no reports implicating HMGN2P21 directly
