01

Overview

High mobility group nucleosome binding domain 1 pseudogene 18 (HMGN1P18) is a processed pseudogene of the HMGN1 gene found in humans[3][4]. While pseudogenes do not encode functional proteins, HMGN1P18 can produce transcripts that may regulate the stability and expression of the mRNA of the parent HMGN1 gene through RNA competition or decoy mechanisms[1][6]. There is evidence that increased expression of HMGA1/HMGN1 pseudogenes can decrease the mRNA and protein expression of the functional gene through competition for regulatory factors, which may play a role in diseases such as type 2 diabetes by impairing insulin receptor expression[1][6]. HMGN1P18 lacks a known direct pharmacological or therapeutic relevance and is not targeted by any approved drugs. It is not a classical enzyme, receptor, or transporter, but rather a member of the broad class of pseudogenes, with potential indirect roles in gene regulation.

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (by RNA-mediated mechanisms)Potential to influence RNA stability of the parental HMGN1 gene
03

Disease associations

Diabetes (via regulatory effects on parental HMGN1, which in turn can influence insulin receptor expression)Other (as with other pseudogenes, possible regulatory roles, but not direct disease causation)
