High mobility group nucleosome binding domain 1 pseudogene 36 (HMGN1P36) is a human pseudogene related to the functional HMGN1 gene, which encodes a chromatin-associated protein involved in modulating chromatin structure and transcriptional activity[5][1]. Like other processed pseudogenes, HMGN1P36 does not produce a functional protein. However, recent research implicates some pseudogenes—including HMGN1P36—as regulatory elements at the RNA level. In particular, HMGN1P36 RNA is reported to act as a microRNA sponge in neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s disease, potentially impacting the regulation of HMGN1 and other cellular targets by sequestering microRNAs[6][2]. There is currently no evidence that HMGN1P36 is a receptor, enzyme, or other direct drug target.
Acts as a miRNA sponge (competing endogenous RNA), potentially modulating the expression of its parental gene HMGN1 or other genes by sequestering disease-relevant microRNAs.
