HIPK1 antisense RNA 1 (HIPK1-AS1)

Target
HIPK1-AS1
Molecular classification
Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), Natural antisense transcript (not a protein, enzyme, receptor, etc.)

Overview

HIPK1 antisense RNA 1 (HIPK1-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcribed antisense to the HIPK1 gene. lncRNAs of this class act through a variety of mechanisms, including modulating processing, stability, or translation of their cognate sense mRNA, as well as acting as scaffolds or decoys for protein complexes. HIPK1-AS1 may regulate the expression and activity of HIPK1, a serine/threonine kinase that phosphorylates transcription factors and is implicated in gene transcription, cell proliferation, apoptosis, stress response, and multiple cancer-related pathways. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms and disease roles of HIPK1-AS1 are still being studied, and it is not currently considered a canonical drug target. Key points: - HIPK1-AS1 is a noncoding RNA, not a protein or receptor. - No direct drugs targeting HIPK1-AS1 are documented. - It may regulate HIPK1, which is involved in several disease-relevant pathways. - The precise function and therapeutic relevance of HIPK1-AS1 itself remain under active research.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for drugs. HIPK1-AS1 is thought to influence HIPK1 gene expression by endogenous antisense mechanisms, potentially affecting translation or stability of the mRNA.

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression via antisense mechanismPotential modulation of HIPK1 mRNA processing, degradation, and/or translationScaffold or decoy for regulatory proteins, recruiting or sequestering effector proteinsPossible pairing with other RNAs, including microRNAs, to regulate their activity
04

Disease associations

Possibly involved in cancer process (by influencing HIPK1 activity, which is linked to p53 activation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis)Extensive specific disease associations for HIPK1-AS1 are currently unclear; lncRNAs often modulate disease phenotypes in cancer, neurodegeneration, and inflammatory conditions
05

Safety considerations

None specifically documented for targeting HIPK1-AS1, as no direct drugs or therapies for this lncRNA are known. LncRNA modulation in general may carry safety risks related to off-target gene regulation or broad effects on transcriptional networks
06

Biomarkers

None established for HIPK1-AS1. The downstream protein HIPK1, and its pathway components (e.g., p53, p21), may serve as biomarkers for cell proliferation or apoptosis in some cancers
