Hippocampal neurogenesis is the process of generating new neurons in the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for memory and spatial navigation. It occurs throughout life, primarily in the dentate gyrus, and involves the proliferation of neural stem cells, their differentiation into neuroblasts and immature neurons, and the maturation and integration of these new neurons into existing hippocampal circuits.
