Overview

The terms 'hips' and 'abdomen' refer to anatomical regions of the human body that are significant for the storage of adipose tissue. The abdomen is a primary site for both subcutaneous and visceral fat, the latter of which is highly associated with metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease (National Institutes of Health/NIH, 2023). The hips and gluteofemoral region primarily contain subcutaneous fat, which may play a different role in metabolic health compared to abdominal fat (PubMed, PMID: 20065971). Clinically, the distribution of fat between these two areas is often assessed via the waist-to-hip ratio, a validated metric for identifying abdominal obesity and predicting health outcomes (World Health Organization/WHO, 2011). Because these terms describe anatomical locations and physiological compartments rather than specific proteins, receptors, or enzymes, they are not considered therapeutic targets in molecular biology or pharmacology. Interventions directed at these areas, such as metabolic drugs or cosmetic surgery, target the underlying biological processes or specific cells (adipocytes) within the regions rather than the regions themselves as a target molecule.
