Target intelligence / Profile preview

Histamine H2 Receptor (H2R)

Target
H2R
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

The histamine H2 receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor that primarily mediates the effects of histamine in stimulating gastric acid secretion. It also regulates gastrointestinal motility, intestinal secretion, and may play roles in cell growth, differentiation, and other physiological processes. H2 receptor antagonists are widely used to reduce stomach acidity for conditions like peptic ulcers and GERD.

02

Mechanism of action

H2 receptor antagonists block histamine-induced stimulation at the H2 receptor on parietal cells, reducing gastric acid secretion.
