Histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT)

Target
HNMT
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Methyltransferase, Class I-like SAM-binding methyltransferase superfamily
01

Overview

Histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the methylation of histamine, inactivating it. It transfers a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) to histamine, producing Nτ-methylhistamine. This is a major histamine inactivation pathway, particularly in the central nervous system. HNMT plays a critical role in modulating allergic reactions, neurotransmission, gastric acid secretion, and other histamine-related processes. Alterations in HNMT function can affect susceptibility to allergic diseases.
