Histidine protein methyltransferase 1 homolog (METTL18)

Target
METTL18
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protein methyltransferase, Ribosomal protein modifier
01

Overview

Histidine protein methyltransferase 1 homolog (METTL18) is a protein methyltransferase that specifically methylates histidine 245 on the ribosomal protein RPL3[1]. This τ-N-methylation modification of RPL3 slows translation elongation specifically at tyrosine codons, ensuring nascent protein folding and maintenance of proteome quality, particularly by protecting cells against aggregation of tyrosine-rich proteins. METTL18 functions primarily as a translational modulator and quality control factor, and altered function or expression of this enzyme may play a role in diseases such as cancer by disturbing protein homeostasis[1][2].
