Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) calcium binding proteins are specialized proteins within the SR of muscle cells that bind and store calcium ions (Ca²⁺). These proteins are essential for regulating intracellular calcium levels, enabling proper muscle contraction and relaxation cycles. Key proteins include Calsequestrin (CASQ1/CASQ2), Sarcalumenin (SAR), and Histidine-rich Calcium-binding Protein (HRC). They function as buffers with high capacity and variable affinity, facilitating rapid changes in cytosolic Ca²⁺ without toxic accumulation. Dysfunction can contribute to myopathies or cardiomyopathies.
