Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are complex fucose-containing glycans present on the surface of enterocytes and other epithelial cells as part of membrane glycoproteins and glycolipids. Their patterns are determined by genetic polymorphisms, including the ABO, Lewis, and secretor (FUT2) gene status. In the intestine, these antigens act as sites for recognition by pathogens, most notably human noroviruses and some rotavirus strains, which use HBGAs as attachment factors or coreceptors for entry. The expression of HBGAs influences susceptibility to certain gastrointestinal infections and may play a broader role in shaping host-microbe interactions and the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Importantly, "histo-blood group antigens on intestinal enterocytes" refers to a heterogeneous, genetically determined family of cell-surface glycans, and not to a single protein or druggable molecular target.
