Histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) is a nuclear enzyme essential for epigenetic regulation through removal of acetyl groups from lysine residues on core histones and other proteins. As part of multi-protein repressive complexes such as Sin3A or NuRD—and regulated by cofactors including zinc ions—its activity shapes chromatin architecture to control gene expression programs vital for development but also implicated in cancer when dysregulated.
