Histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) is a zinc-dependent enzyme that plays a central role in the regulation of gene expression by catalyzing the removal of acetyl groups from lysine residues on histone proteins, leading to chromatin condensation and transcriptional repression. It belongs to class I histone deacetylases and is considered a general oncoprotein due to its role in promoting tumorigenesis. HDAC2 often functions as part of large multiprotein complexes and can also act on non-histone proteins to regulate their function.
