Overview
Histone deacetylase 4 antisense RNA 1 (HDAC4-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the opposite strand of the HDAC4 locus. It regulates the transcriptional activity of the HDAC4 gene, especially under hypoxic conditions, by acting as a scaffold that recruits HIF-1α to the HDAC4 promoter, thereby suppressing HDAC4 expression in human retinal pigment epithelial cells. Multiple transcript variants of HDAC4-AS1 exist, each potentially interacting differently with protein factors. Its precise biological and disease relevance remains under investigation, but its role in cellular response to oxygen stress is established.
