Histone deacetylase 5 (HDAC5) is an enzyme that regulates gene expression by modifying chromatin structure. It belongs to the class IIa family of histone deacetylases and plays a role in various cellular processes including cell cycle progression, differentiation, memory consolidation, cancer cell migration/invasion, and immune modulation. Its activity is modulated by phosphorylation and it interacts with multiprotein complexes to exert its effects.
