Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is a unique member of the histone deacetylase family, classified as a class IIb HDAC. Unlike most other HDACs, which are primarily nuclear, HDAC6 is predominantly localized in the cytoplasm and acts on both histone and non-histone substrates. It plays critical roles in cellular processes such as protein degradation, cell motility, stress response, and regulation of microtubule dynamics. It is a therapeutic target for cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases.
Inhibition of HDAC6 deacetylase activity, leading to increased acetylation of target proteins (e.g., α-tubulin, HSP90) and altered cellular processes.
