Histone deacetylase class II (HDAC class II) refers to a subgroup of histone deacetylases, which are enzymes that remove acetyl groups from lysine residues on histones and other proteins. This action leads to chromatin condensation and transcriptional repression, thereby regulating gene expression and various cellular processes. Class II HDACs are further divided into two subclasses: Class IIa (HDAC4, HDAC5, HDAC7, and HDAC9) and Class IIb (HDAC6 and HDAC10). They are implicated in developmental processes, cell differentiation, cancer progression, and neurological disorders, making them promising therapeutic targets for small molecule inhibitors.
