Overview

Histone H1.3 is a member of the linker histone H1 family, which are basic nuclear proteins required for the packaging of DNA into chromatin in eukaryotic cells. Unlike core histones, H1.3 binds to linker DNA between nucleosomes, thereby facilitating the condensation of chromatin into higher-order structures and playing an essential role in genome organization and gene regulation. H1.3 also participates in nucleosome spacing, chromatin fiber formation, and modulation of gene transcription through chromatin remodeling and potential interactions with chromatin-associated proteins. It is one of several H1 variants, and is expressed in a replication-dependent manner during S-phase of the cell cycle. No clinically approved drugs are known to target Histone H1.3, and it is not typically considered a direct pharmacological target. However, its function is critical for normal chromatin dynamics, cell viability, and epigenetic regulation.
