Overview

Histone H2A type 1-D (H2AC7) is a core nuclear protein encoded by the HIST1H2AD gene in humans and found in other eukaryotes. It is part of the nucleosome octamer, which packages and organizes DNA into chromatin. Each nucleosome consists of an octamer formed by pairs of the core histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4, and 146 base pairs of DNA wound around it. H2A type 1-D is a canonical replication-dependent histone, highly conserved and essential for the structural integrity and compaction of DNA, as well as for regulating gene expression, DNA replication, and epigenetic modifications. Transcripts of this gene typically lack introns and polyA tails, and are part of the large histone gene cluster on human chromosome 6. While histone function and modification are tightly linked to normal cell function, genome stability, and disease processes such as cancer, histone H2A type 1-D itself is not a direct therapeutic target or biomarker.
