Overview

Histone H2A type 2-A (H2AC18) is a replication-dependent core histone protein and part of the histone H2A family, encoded by an intronless gene within a histone gene cluster on chromosome 1. Together with the other three core histones (H2B, H3, and H4), it forms an octameric complex around which DNA is wrapped to create nucleosomes, the fundamental units of chromatin structure in eukaryotes. This protein plays a vital role in condensing DNA into chromatin, thereby regulating DNA accessibility for transcription, replication, and repair processes. Modifications and the specific incorporation of H2A or its variants can profoundly affect nucleosome stability and chromatin architecture, impacting gene expression and genome integrity. While alterations in core histones may be associated with some diseases, H2A type 2-A itself is not considered a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme[1][3][4].
