Histone H2A type 2-C (H2AC20) is a core component of the nucleosome, the primary structural unit of chromatin in eukaryotic cells[1][4]. Two molecules of H2A type 2-C combine with other core histones (H2B, H3, H4) to form the histone octamer, around which DNA is wrapped to form nucleosomes, thereby compacting DNA and regulating its accessibility[1]. This histone is part of the canonical, replication-dependent H2A histone family and contributes to essential cellular processes such as chromatin structure organization, DNA packaging, regulation of gene expression, DNA replication, DNA repair, and maintenance of chromosomal stability[1][4][5]. Alterations or dysfunctions in core histones, including H2A family members, have been associated with disease states, particularly cancer and disorders involving genome instability[1][5]. Histone H2A type 2-C has no known direct approved drug interactions or roles as a therapeutic target as of current knowledge, but its function is fundamental to chromatin biology and genome integrity[1][5].
