Histone H2A type 3 (HIST3H2A)

Target
HIST3H2A
Molecular classification
Histone protein, Chromatin component, Transcriptional regulator (by chromatin remodeling effect)
01

Overview

Histone H2A type 3 (also called H2A clustered histone 25, HIST3H2A, or H2AW) is one of numerous H2A histone variants encoded in clustered gene arrays in the genome[3][5]. As a core component of nucleosomes, it contributes to DNA packaging and chromatin structure. While some H2A variants participate in specialized processes—such as X-chromosome inactivation or DNA damage response—this variant itself is not commonly associated with direct therapeutic targeting or selective modulation. Functional diversity among H2A family members arises from differences at the N- and C-termini, affecting nucleosome stability, gene regulation, and disease relevance[1][4].

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for direct drug action; general mechanisms include altering post-translational modifications or chromatin accessibility[1].

03

Biological functions

Chromatin packagingRegulation of DNA accessibilityTranscriptional regulationGenome stabilityDNA repair (roles more associated with certain variants)
04

Disease associations

Cancer (chromatin instability and epigenetic dysregulation)Other (roles in genome integrity and X-chromosome inactivation implicate epigenetic diseases)
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable; targeting core histones directly would pose severe risks due to general disruption of chromatin structure and cellular viability[1]
