Histone H2B (H2B)

Target
H2B
Molecular classification
Histone, Chromatin remodeling
01

Overview

Histone H2B is one of the five main histone proteins that play a central role in the structure and function of chromatin in eukaryotic cells. It is a basic, positively charged nuclear protein essential for organizing DNA into nucleosomes, thereby facilitating chromosome packaging, transcription regulation, DNA replication, repair, and maintaining chromosomal stability. Post-translational modifications on H2B influence gene expression patterns by altering chromatin compaction or recruiting regulatory proteins. Alterations or mutations affecting histone H2B or its modifying enzymes can disrupt normal gene regulation, with implications for diseases such as cancer.
