Overview

Histone H2B type 1-D (H2BC5) is a basic nuclear protein encoded by the intronless HIST1H2BD gene, found within the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6p22-p21.3. It is a replication-dependent member of the histone H2B family, comprising part of the nucleosome core around which DNA is wrapped. Nucleosomes regulate accessibility of DNA to transcriptional machinery, contributing centrally to transcription regulation, DNA replication, repair, and chromosomal stability. Post-translational modifications of histones constitute a 'histone code' governing recruitment of transcription factors and chromatin-remodeling complexes. Dysregulated histone expression and modification are linked to cancer and other diseases; in particular, some evidence suggests association of H2BC5 with glioma susceptibility and hematologic cancers
