Overview

Histone H2B type 1-O (encoded by the *HIST1H2BO* gene, commonly abbreviated as H2BC17) is a core nuclear protein that forms part of the nucleosome, which packages and organizes DNA into chromatin in eukaryotic cells. Two molecules each of histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 assemble into an octamer, around which DNA coils to form the nucleosome, the fundamental repeating unit of chromatin structure. Histone H2B type 1-O is essential for nucleosome assembly and thus participates in regulating DNA accessibility for transcription, replication, and repair, contributing to genomic integrity and chromosomal stability. H2BC17 is not considered a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme and has no direct drug interactions or use as a clinical biomarker[1][2][6].
