Overview

Histone H2B type 2-E is a basic structural protein encoded by the HIST2H2BE gene in humans and is a core component of nucleosomes, which organize eukaryotic chromosomal DNA into chromatin. It forms an octameric complex together with H2A, H3, and H4 histones to wrap DNA and regulate its accessibility. This protein is involved in the regulation of transcription, DNA replication, DNA repair, and maintenance of chromosomal stability. In addition to its structural roles, Histone H2B type 2-E has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) properties. Downregulation of the HIST2H2BE gene is associated with cervical cancer progression, suggesting possible relevance as a biomarker in oncology.
