Histone H2B.N (H2B.N)

Target
H2B.N
Molecular classification
Histone, Histone variant, Chromatin component
01

Overview

Histone H2B.N (abbreviated H2B.N; gene: H2BN1) is a variant of the canonical histone H2B, functioning as a core component of nucleosomes in chromatin. Unlike replication-coupled canonical histones, H2B.N is predominantly expressed in mammalian oocytes and early zygotes and is thought to contribute to unusual chromatin packaging or potentially nonchromatin functions in the mammalian germline. It is part of a small group of mammalian-specific H2B variants, recently identified through phylogenomic studies. There are no known disease roles, clinical biomarkers, or targeted therapeutics associated with H2B.N at this time
