Histone methyltransferases (HMTs) are enzymes that catalyze the transfer of one, two, or three methyl groups to specific lysine or arginine residues on histone proteins, primarily histones H3 and H4. This post-translational modification plays a crucial role in regulating chromatin structure and gene expression by either activating or repressing transcription depending on the site and degree of methylation. They use S-Adenosyl methionine (SAM) as a cofactor.
