Overview
The HIV-1 capsid protein (CA) is a critical structural component of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) virion. It forms the conical core that encases and protects the viral RNA genome and associated enzymes necessary for early stages of infection. The capsid is assembled from approximately 250 hexamers and 12 pentamers of CA monomers, creating a fullerene cone structure. It plays multiple essential roles throughout the viral life cycle: genome protection & delivery, host interactions & trafficking, reverse transcription & integration, and assembly & maturation. Its unique structure and essential functions make HIV‑1 CA an attractive target for antiretroviral drug development.
