The gp120 C5 region is one of five conserved domains (C1–C5) within the HIV-1 gp120 glycoprotein, a key viral envelope protein involved in host cell entry. While much of gp120 is variable to evade immune detection, C5 is relatively conserved and contributes to stabilizing the envelope structure and facilitating the association between gp120 and gp41, crucial for virus-cell fusion[2][6][7]. C5 participates in antigenic determination, influences envelope processing, and is involved in interactions necessary for functional viral envelope formation. Although this region is not a frequent direct target for clinical drugs, it remains a site of interest for vaccine and antibody development efforts due to its conservation and functional importance[4][5][6].
