Overview

The HIV envelope protein (Env) is a complex, trimeric glycoprotein found on the surface of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It plays a critical role in viral entry into host cells by mediating attachment and fusion with the target cell membrane. Env is initially synthesized as a single precursor polyprotein, gp160, which is cleaved into gp120 (receptor binding) and gp41 (membrane fusion). It is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and an important focus for vaccine and drug development.
