HIV Maturation

Molecular classification
Viral process
01

Overview

HIV maturation is a critical, late-stage process in the HIV-1 life cycle that transforms newly budded, immature, and noninfectious viral particles into mature, infectious virions. This transformation is driven by the proteolytic cleavage of the Gag and Gag-Pol polyproteins by the viral protease (PR), resulting in dramatic structural rearrangements within the virus particle. Successful HIV maturation is essential for infectivity, and defects or inhibition lead to the production of noninfectious virions.
