Overview

HIVEP zinc finger 1 (HIVEP1) is a large transcription factor from the ZAS protein family, characterized by multiple zinc finger domains, including widely spaced pairs of C2H2-type fingers and a distinct central zinc finger[1][2][5]. This protein binds specifically to the DNA kappa-B motif (5'-GGGACTTTCC-3'), which is present in enhancer elements of several viral promoters—such as those of HIV-1—and in related sequences within enhancers of several cellular genes, including class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC), interleukin-2 receptor, and interferon-beta[1][2][4][5]. HIVEP1 thereby regulates the transcription of both viral and host genes, influencing immune responses, T-cell activation, and viral gene expression. Isoforms may also function in apoptosis, and dysregulation or genetic variants in HIVEP1 have associations with immune deficiency and neurodevelopmental disorders[1][4][5]. No direct interacting drugs, biomarkers, or specific safety/therapeutic concerns are currently established for HIVEP1 as a clinical target[1][4][5].
