HLA-L is a human gene classified as a **pseudogene** and is not believed to encode a functional protein in humans[8]. It is part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I region on chromosome 6. While it is predicted to have sequence similarity to HLA class I genes (such as HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C), and may once have encoded an MHC class I–like molecule, it does **not produce a functional cell surface or intracellular protein** involved in antigen presentation. MHC class I functional molecules normally present peptides to cytotoxic T cells as part of the adaptive immune response[1][3][5][7]; however, HLA-L does not participate in this process due to its status as a pseudogene, and thus has **no direct role in immune surveillance** or disease.
