Overview

HLA complex group 21 non-coding RNA (HCG21) is a long non-coding RNA gene located within the HLA locus on chromosome 6, band p21.3. Unlike the classical HLA class I or II genes that encode cell surface glycoproteins critical for antigen presentation and immune responses[1][3][5], HCG21 does not encode a protein. Instead, it may play a role in gene regulation, chromatin structure modification, or epigenetic mechanisms, as is typical for many lncRNAs[2][4][6]. Its precise biological function remains to be characterized. While ncRNAs have broad impacts on cellular homeostasis and disease—especially in gene regulation and as biomarkers—there is currently no evidence that HCG21 is a validated therapeutic target, nor are there drugs or biomarker guidance associated with this specific molecule. Note: - HCG21 is frequently cataloged alongside HLA antigens due to its localization within the HLA genomic region, but it should not be confused with HLA class I or II molecules or considered a receptor or immunotherapy target[5]. - Information is limited: No direct disease association, drug interaction, or therapeutic relevance is present as of the current literature. Future research may clarify its molecular and clinical significance.
