HLA complex group 4 (HCG4)

Target
HCG4
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA)
01

Overview

HLA complex group 4 (HCG4) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located in the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC/HLA) region. It is associated with genes such as HLA-G and HLA-A, suggesting possible roles in modulating immune response or gene regulation. Elevated expression has been observed in certain cancers (notably laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma) and in preeclampsia placentas, supporting its use as a biomarker for disease recurrence risk and stratification[1][5]. As a non-coding RNA, HCG4 does not encode a protein and currently does not constitute a traditional therapeutic target suitable for drug development. It has multiple transcript variants and has been marked in reports as part of several multi-gene risk signatures across multiple disease contexts[1][5].

Biological functions

Putative regulator of gene expressionPossible involvement in immune response modulation via association with genes such as HLA-G and HLA-AReported as a biomarker candidate for certain cancers (e.g., laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma), preeclampsia, and recurrence risk prediction

Disease associations

Cancer (biomarker for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, overall survival risk stratification)Inflammation (seen in chronic salpingitis)Infection (potential role given the association with HLA family, involved in immune response)Other: Hematocele of tunica vaginalis testis, preeclampsia

Biomarkers

HCG4 expression level has been evaluated as a biomarker for cancer recurrence, overall survival risk, and complications in conditions such as preeclampsia and laryngeal cancer
