Overview

HLA complex group 4 pseudogene 8 (HCG4P8) is a member of the HLA complex group 4 pseudogenes, located within the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region on chromosome 6. Pseudogenes in this region, including HCG4P8, are non-coding DNA sequences that are homologous to functional genes but are not translated into functional proteins. HCG4P8 has been annotated and cataloged as an unprocessed pseudogene, meaning it retains significant sequence similarity to functional HLA genes but contains mutations or sequence changes that prevent it from encoding a functional protein[2]. There is currently no evidence that HCG4P8 has a direct biological function, role in disease, or therapeutic relevance as a drug target. Although the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) gene family is central to immune regulation and disease susceptibility[1], HCG4P8 specifically is categorized as a pseudogene and shows no evidence of encoding a receptor, transporter, enzyme, or other druggable entity, nor does it play a known regulatory role[2]. The presence of HCG4P8 in gene expression datasets (e.g., GTEx/human tissue transcriptomes) does not suggest a functional protein product; pseudogene transcription is possible but does not imply protein-level function[3]. There are no reported disease associations, known drug interactions, or validated biomarker status for HCG4P8. There is little functional or disease-specific literature on HCG4P8 beyond reference genome annotation and its location as an MHC pseudogene, reflecting the current limits of biological knowledge about this locus[2].
