It comprises sequence elements from HLA class I gene fragments and endogenous retroviral (ERV) sequence, acting mainly as a regulatory noncoding RNA. HCP5 is involved in transcriptional regulation, binding transcription factors, enhancers, and chromatin remodelers. It interacts with microRNAs and influences immune checkpoint responses in cancers, making it relevant for disease association studies. Traditional annotation as "cytochrome c pseudogene 5" is a legacy label; functionally, HCP5 is not an enzyme, receptor, or classical drug target, but a regulatory lncRNA associated with cancer, autoimmunity, and infection[1][2][3].
